With improving school security in mind, Board of Education votes to try closing schools during the next school year on the days residents head to the polls.
At its Thursday meeting at Brooklawn Middle School, the Parsippany Board of Education easily passed a measure to change the school calendar to allow educational buildings that house students to shut down on election days. The move will be in place for the next school year, said BOE member Fran Orthwein; schools will be closed on Nov.5, general election day, and June 3, 2014, primary election day. Under the plan teacher orientation and development will be offered Sept. 1, teachers will have Sept. 2 and 3 for preparation days and students in grades 6 and 9 will report for their orientation Sept. 4. Superintendent says district is working with township officials to keep kids safe in the classroom.
More than three months after the Newtown shootings, school security remains high on the list of priorities for the Parsippany Board of Education. At its meeting at Parsippany High School last Tuesday, Superintendent of Schools LeRoy Seitz presented an update on the district's efforts to make sure tragedy does not visit local schools. Seitz reported that he met with Mayor James Barberio and Parsippany Police Chief Anthony DeZenzo Jan. 29 "to see what could be done in partnership with the town to assess security." As a result of the meeting, Seitz said PPD Deputy Chief Paul Philipps has been assigned to work with the district to tighten security in the schools. I am writing in regard to a security issue that I personally observed while voting at Intervale School during the referendum vote on Tuesday. Toward the end of 2012, Intervale PTA members expressed concerns to the school regarding election day voting procedures. Specifically, we addressed the issue that the front doors to the school were left unsecured allowing full access to the school so that people can vote. The PTA provided a solution to the security breach by suggesting that the back entrances to the gym be used as the primary entrance to for voters. Board president demands action on security in Parsippany schools by end of January.
The Parsippany Board of Education held a moment of silence during its meeting Thursday night in memory of the 20 children and six adults gunned down last week at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Board President Dr. Frank Calabria said it was difficult for him to find the words to express his feelings about “this unspeakable horror.” “Today I was at an elementary school, and I saw these little sixth- and seventh-graders walking,” Calabria said. “It was all I could do to not hug every single one of them.” Calabria has also suggested the board perform a good day each day for 26 days in honor of the 26 victims. Schools chief says educators are ready to help grieving students.
Friday's tragic events at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., naturally lead citizens to think about local schools and the safety of students within them. The mass shooting, which left 20 youngsters and seven adults, including suspected shooter Adam Lanza, dead, certainly is on the minds of those working in the Parsippany-Troy Hills school district.
