The U.S. Supreme Court is in the midst of a landmark time in Washington, D.C.: On Tuesday, the nation's highest court heard testimony on Proposition 8, the California law that stripped legal equality from gay couples in that state. On Wednesday, the justices are hearing testimony on former President Bill Clinton's 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, a bill LGBT people and allies call discriminatory—and a law Clinton now says he regrets signing and promoting. Just last week, Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri and Republican Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio hit the Sunday talk-show circuit to talk of the need for an end to the national stigmatization against gays and lesbians and their families. Morris Plains resident will not be compensated for emotional distress she says she endured after witnessing her dog killed. But should court have ruled otherwise?
Sometimes the law just doesn't seem to provide justice. Last Tuesday's ruling by the New Jersey Supreme Court in a case emanating from Morris Plains is a good example. The justices found that a pet is just a possession and a dog owner is not entitled to payment for the emotional distress of watching (wo)man's best friend killed. Five years ago, Joyce McDougall took her 9-year-old maltipoo Angel for a walk one June day. Maltipoos are small and fluffy with distinctive faces. Adorable. A much larger dog ran out, grabbed Angel by the neck, shook the dog and dropped her, killing the animal right before her owner's eyes. McDougall sued the dog's owner and won $5,000 in compensatory damages for Angel's death. But the court did not grant an award…

About 18 residents represented by U.S. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen met outside his Morristown offices Friday, called for Republican to join bi-partisan effort to change 2010 Supreme Court ruling.
Some took issue with what they called a "tow the party line" attitude by U.S. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen. Some wanted to let the GOP politician know that, with recent redistricting, they, too, were now being represented by him. Others said it was a bi-partisan issue that needed his support. Whatever the case, and whatever their complaint, about 18 protestors wanted it known on Friday, outside Frelinghuysen's Morristown office, that there were problems, and they needed to be fixed. The crux of much of the group's reason for protest rested in Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission, a landmark decision by the Supreme Court in 2010. Christie is entitled to appointments, and the Dems are obligated to keep the court in balance.
Last week’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in Trenton provided yet another New Jersey example of civics in action. It wasn't pretty, but it was necessary. By a 7-6 vote, the committee rejected one of Gov. Chris Christie’s two nominees for the state Supreme Court. After a marathon session, Phillip Kwon, who worked for U.S. Attorney Christie, was still just the number two man in the state Attorney General’s office. And Christie’s other nominee, Chatham Mayor Bruce Harris, had to leave without even a hearing, which may have been a blessing compared to what Kwon went through.
