An 'Oldie but a Goodie' Thanksgiving Dessert

Pumpkin cheesecake with bourbon-sour-cream icing has become a holiday staple at the Chmiel house.

For Paula Chmiel, Thanksgiving traditions often come in the form of cooking up those tried-and-true favorites that make it such a special holiday. The South Orange resident is a professional chef. In her family, pumpkin cheescake is one of those recipes that people talk about for weeks both before and after the holiday, so give this one a try if you want to impress! Originally published in Gourmet in 1990, it was a recipe Paula noticed on the magazine cover while at college and she just had to make it. Jump ahead 21 years and the same recipe is still alive and well both in the Chmiel house and online (www.epicurious.com), though she has changed it up a bit here and there. While Paula isn't working in a restaurant kitchen these days—she's a…

Tips for Seniors and Caregivers on Avoiding Holiday Blues

The most wonderful time of the year isn't so wonderful for many of us.

The holidays should be a time of joy, good cheer and high hopes for the new year. Shopping for gifts, decorating and preparing for get-togethers with family and friends are usually anticipated events that accompany the season. But many people, especially older adults and caregivers of all ages, experience the holiday blues during this special time of the year.  Older adults can have an especially difficult time with the holidays for many reasons. The recent loss of an important person or the memory of a traumatic event, such as a serious illness, can dampen holiday spirits. The inability to perform everyday tasks and holiday traditions, such as preparing a large holiday meal, can make the upcoming events difficult to handle and may cause …

Food Donations Needed For Thanksgiving & Hurricane Sandy

Local food pantries struggling to keep up with the demand this holiday season.

For food pantries across Northern New Jersey, Hurricane Sandy dealt a double blow: It increased the number of families in need of assistance and shortened the span between Halloween (which Gov. Chris Christie moved to Nov. 5) and Thankgsiving, which comes early this year. Prior to the storm, the Community Food Bank of New Jersey reported more than 960,000 residents of Northern New Jersey are food insecure, meaning at times they lack access to enough food to maintain an active, healthy life.  The Community Food Bank is hosting its annual Thanksgiving Food Drive this Saturday, Nov. 17 from 9am to 2pm at the following locations: Morris County Passaic County  Sommerset County

What New Jersey's Doing with Thursday's Leftovers

A turkey sandwich is just so lame. Try these ideas from around the state.

So the feast has been over for two days and your fridge is still stuffed with leftovers? No worries. We asked our own staffers and their friends and neighbors and of course, being Patch, scoured the Web, to find out what Jersey does in the days after Thanksgiving. Of course, there's a turkey sandwich. But why not make it a bit more Jersey-specific, with a turkey Sloppy Joe? First, a bit of history: cooking enthusiast Ben Salmon explains the history of how the sandwich was invented in South Orange and rates three local purveyors. But now on to the recipe, complete with homemade Russian dressing. Ben has lots of other good ideas for leftovers, including what sounds to us like a Thanksgiving Dagwood. Want a more traditional sandwich? Try "…

Parsippany: What Are You Thankful For?

Share with your neighbors: What inspires gratitude for you today?

Another Thanksgiving is upon us. For some, it is a time of turkey (or tofurky) and football with family and friends. Certain others see this third Thursday of November as a celebration of genocide and a tradition to be avoided. And for many folks, this is just another day to go to work. Whatever one is doing, whether part of a group or alone, whether rich or poor or healthy or not, even if one chooses not to celebrate Thanksgiving Day, we suspect there are few among us who would debate the merits of counting one's blessings and being grateful for them.  We think this is a particularly appropriate thought for Parsippany. The township has endured much in 2011, including Hurricane Irene and its floods and the unprecedented October snowstorm. …

How to Watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

Follow these tips and tricks and have a blast braving the crowds for a fun morning with marching bands, massive balloon characters—and millions of other enthusiasts.

For some, it's a chance to get away from peeling potatoes or running to the grocery store for last-minute provisions. For others, it's a chance to avoid Aunt Millie telling everyone — for the 20th year — about the time you Krazy-glued your hand to your head on prom night. Or maybe you just love a parade.... Regardless of your motivation, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, the New York spectacle celebrating its 85th anniversary, is something that everyone living in the shadow of Manhattan has to do at least once in their lifetime. The Thanksgiving-day forecast for New York City predicts clear skies and a manageable high of 50 degrees. That said, anyone hoping to get close to Woodstock, the Smurfs, Kermit the Frog, Julius the Sock Monkey, …

Northvail Students Remember the Needy

Local elementary schoolers do their part to give for the holiday season.

Helping those who are homeless or hungry is an important part of the holiday season, and even youngsters are taking that sentiment to heart. The Northvail Elementary School Student Council recently organized a food drive to help supply the Parsippany Emergency Food Pantry in Lake Hiawatha. During their free time, council members created posters asking faculty, staff and fellow students to donate to the food drive and hung them around the school. All last week, the students gathered donations from every classroom: Northvail was able to collect two car loads of canned and boxed goods for distribution to the township food pantry.
