Following the June 28 anti-bullying symposium in Parsippany, United Way of Northern New Jersey has issued a press release about its collaborative efforts here tackling the issue. The recent high-profile bullying tragedies in the state spotlight the need for the state and educators to focus energies equally on prevention as on documentation of bullying cases, according to a United Way of Northern New Jersey official. The United Way of Northern New Jersey is asking Morris County governing bodies to protect $22 million in funds earmarked for affordable housing, so that the state doesn't take the money back. Several towns in the county have a deadline of July 17 to use the money for affordable housing projects, or risk having the money disappear. United Way of Northern New Jersey is partnering with the IRS, AARP, and other community organizations to provide low-income residents with free tax preparation from IRS-certified volunteers. These free tax sites will be open in Morris, North Essex, Somerset, Sussex, and Warren counties from Feb. 1 through April 15. Three of the sites offered are in Parsippany-Troy Hills: the Lake Hiawatha branch of the Parsippany Free Public Library, the Police Athletic League Center and the Parsippany Community Center. This free service is available only to families and individuals with a simple return (1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, Schedules A & B). On Monday, the United Ways serving five New Jersey counties became more, well ... united. Five United Ways—serving Morris, North Essex, Somerset, Sussex and Warren Counties—became one Monday. They're now incorporated as United Way of Northern New Jersey, and will continue the former groups' core mission: to pool fundraising and support efforts for several area charities. The work centers around improving health, education and income in the communities United Way organizations serve. The merger does not involve United Way of Essex and West Hudson.
