Parsippany Native Starts Non-Profit to Heal Through 'Magic'

Parsippany native Paul Cohen is starting a non-profit organization to help people through the art of magic.

The idea for Magical Healing is one that enflames and impassions Parsippany native Paul Cohen, who is realizing his dream of helping others through illusions. Magical Healing, which is still in the beginning stages, is to become a non-profit organization in which local students would learn magic tricks and illusions to perform for people in hospitals or shelters. “Local students can engage in the timeless art of magic to transport children and adults in hospitals, senior centers, and homeless shelters from a place of worry to wonderment,” said Cohen. “For in that moment of wonderment a child does not have cancer, an elder is not wheelchair bound and a mother and young child are not wearing someone else's clothes.” The promise of Magical …

Local Kids Will Go Hungry to Feel, Fight Hunger

A group of tweens and teens from Parsippany's Chinese Christian Church of NJ will take part in the hunger-fighting project 30 Hour Famine.

About 40 middle and high schoolers from Parsippany's Chinese Christian Church of New Jersey plan to fight world hunger this weekend—by going hungry and sleeping in cardboard boxes on the street. On Friday and Saturday, the kids are taking part in 30 Hour Famine, a national overnight event in which Christian youth groups band together to go without food except for juice and water for 30 hours. The project has a number of aims: to raise awareness and support for world hunger and poverty-fighting efforts, to add a rich experience to the children's religious education, and to raise funds for World Vision, a Christian organization that works on issues related to poverty and injustice.  CCCNJ Pastor Manny Low said the church's children will stay…

Anytime Fitness Gives Back with Blood Drive

Gym partnered with the Blood Center of New Jersey in an effort to save lives.

Anytime Fitness saw a steady stream of people come forward to give the gift of life during its Spring Blood Drive, held Thursday at the Tabor Road gym. Patch was one of the many who donated blood for the Blood Center of New Jersey, and it was terribly rewarding and practically painless. "It's about giving back to the community," said the fitness center's co-owner, Eric Skovronek. "Giving blood saves lives." Alicia Savage, the phelebotomist who drew our blood, said donors are needed every day for patients in New Jersey hospitals who need lifesaving transfusions. Until the next time the BCNJ mobile clinic pulls into Anytime Fitness' parking lot those interested in doing their part to help others can do so at the organization's East Orange …

At its Wednesday night meeting, group President Joseph Jannarone Jr. presented member Ralph Rocco and his family with $2,000 to support a walking team called Bella's Bunch. The group is a visible and vocal force in raising money to help the Valerie Fund, a charity whose website says it provides “support for the focused comprehensive health care of children with cancer and blood disorders.” The fund was established in 1976 by Ed and Sue Goldstein in memory of their daughter Valerie after her battle with cancer.   The Bunch is named for Rocco's daughter, 11-year-old Central Middle School student and two-time cancer survivor Bella Rocco, who is…

Irene Flood Survivors Come Together for Anniversary

Volunteers put together an event celebrating "resiliency, hope, courage and deep, deep generosity" in many of those who suffered in last summer's unprecedented floods.

Wednesday marks one year since Hurricane Irene made its appearance in Parsippany and changed hundreds of residents' lives, perhaps forever. The anniversary was the reason for a picnic held at Lake Hiawatha's Volunteers Park attended by more than 50 flood survivors, township leaders and volunteers. "We wanted to have everyone come together to show their resiliency," said Wendy Chin of Project Recover, an arm of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Paterson that offered support services to those in Morris and Passaic counties affected by Irene's devastation. "There is a hope and resiliency that I feel when talking to these people. They are finally starting to get into their homes or get the permits they need. That's something to celebrate!" …

Music Fills Parsippany Christian Church Food Pantry

Faith community hosts Rock It for Hunger concert Saturday to help the needy.

Music filled the air at Parsippany Christian Church Saturday at the family-friendly Rock It for Hunger concert. Artists including Big Jeff, the NXT Gen Band, Julie Nevel, Chris Johnson and the Parsippany Presbyterian Church Band brought the rock for a good cause—filling the shelves of Parsippany Christian's Mind, Body and Soul Food Pantry. According to organizer Patricia Wood, fill them they did, as the price of admission for the event was a bag of non-perishable food items. "The pantry is full," she told Patch. "We had a little over 100 in attendance, and we raised $2,150 in food products." Wood said Shop Rite of Parsippany made a cash donation to the effort, and all of the artists played for free. Additionally, Precision Interactive …
