Retired Cop Fills Board of Ed Vacancy, Cogan Denied Again

Anthony DeIntinis earns one-year term by a 5-3 vote.

Parsippany's Board of Education is again a board of nine. At a special meeting Thursday night to choose a candidate to fill its vacant seat, the board selected former police officer Anthony DeIntinis. The board seat was supposed to go to Joanne Mancuso, who came in third behind James Carifi and Frank Calabria in the Nov. 6 election to win a spot on the panel. In late December, she said personal issues forced her to opt out of being sworn in and taking the position. Though Mancuso was not a sworn member, new President Susy Golderer announced Jan. 3 that the board would follow the same procedures used to replace a sitting member who steps down mid-term.  The board heard from three applicants: Calabria's running mate Alison C. Cogan (who came…

Neglia Withdraws from School Board Consideration

Former board member supports Alison Cogan to fill vacant seat.

Former Board of Education member Frank Neglia is putting aside efforts to get back onto the board.  Neglia, who served more than six years, sent a letter to the school district asking that his name be removed from consideration for the school board vacancy created when Joanne Mancuso decided not to take the seat she won in the November 2012 election. The BOE will hold a special meeting at the administration building Thursday at 7 p.m. to fill the seat. Others believed to be in contention for the open position are former candidates Alison Cogan and Anthony DeIntinis. Neglia is giving his support to former running mate Cogan. "Alison was the next person in line according to the resulting number of votes cast by the citizens of Parsippany," …

I agree with Mr. Comora. I have had a fantastic experience with Parsippany's school system. I also thank you Frank for your years of service and outstanding commitment to our community as I thank all those who serve the community in one way or another. Time for a nice relaxing vacation with your family. It is well deserved.   more ›

School Board Prepares to Fill Vacant Seat

BOE attorney says Joanne Mancuso's decision not to take the seat she won in November puts the board in a most unusual situation.

The Parsippany Board of Education is supposed to be made up of nine members. But late last month, Joanne Mancuso, who won one of the three open slots in the Nov. 6 election, announced that she would not take the seat or be sworn in, leaving the board in unfamiliar waters. At its Thursday reorganization meeting, the body announced that it will hold a special meeting at the administration building Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. to do the work involved in filling the seat. The situation is an odd one for the district. When a sitting member vacates a seat, policy is clear: The remaining board members take resumes and applications for interested contenders and hold a special public meeting to interview the candidates, deliberate (which may be done in closed…

BOE Member-Elect Declines to Take Board Seat

Joanne Mancuso, who was elected to the Parsippany Board of Education in November, said she does not want to be sworn in.

Joanne Mancuso, who was elected to the Parsippany Board of Education Nov. 6, will not be taking the oath of office in January, according to a letter she sent to the district. Interim Business Administrator Mark Resnick announced Mancuso’s decision during the board’s Thursday night meeting. Resnick did not say whether Mancuso listed any reasons for her decision. Mancuso, who had previously served on the board, was one of three candidates—along with James Carifi and Dr. Frank Calabria, the current board president —to win seats on the board. Those three beat out Alison Cogan, Anthony DeIntinis and Frank Neglia, current board vice president. Mancuso had previously said she planned to get up to speed on board issues and, after her January …

Ballot Positioning Factor in BOE Outcome, Some Say

Frank Calabria, James Carifi and Joanne Mancuso—Nos. 1, 2 and 3 on the ballot—earn school board seats while Vice President Frank Neglia ousted.

One, two, three. That's the explanation many are giving for the result of Tuesday's Board of Education election, which handed victory to Parsippany Police Capt. James Carifi, BOE President Frank Calabria and former school board member Joanne Mancuso. The numbers are the order in which the three appeared on the ballot. Calabria said it was clear to him that the positioning of the candidates played a part in the balloting. He said he felt uncomfortable celebrating his win when his ticketmates, BOE Vice President Frank Neglia and challenger Alison Cogan, had a different result.  Carifi's ticketmate, former Passaic police officer Anthony DeIntinis also went down in defeat. Cogan, Neglia and DeIntinis were positioned at the bottom of the BOE …
