Barberio administration remains mum on Dr. Louis Valori's allegations that the mayor and others attempted to keep him out of the 2013 election by offering him a township job.
PARSIPPANY, NJ -- According to Township Council candidate Dr. Louis Valori, Mayor James Barberio and members of his administration attempted to give him a township job in order to entice him not to run for political office this year. Valori told Patch that he believes the mayor, who is running for a second term, did not want to face a challenge in the June 4 primary. In addition, mayoral challenger Paul Carifi Jr. , who now sits on the Town Council, told Patch that he was asked for his resume prior to announcing his candidacy in January, but was not given a reason for the request. Valori, who is running with Robert J. Peluso as part of the Carifi ticket, said the story began in late November when he said he was approached by Town Council…

The mayor will run for another four years on a ticket including council incumbent Vincent Ferrara and newcomer Milin Shah.
Mayor James Barberio kicked off his re-election effort at a kickoff and fundraising event at the Sheraton Hotel Thursday evening. A large crowd of well-wishers and dignitaries were on hand to lend their support as Barberio announced a campaign ticket including Council Vice President Vincent Ferrara, who is running for re-election, and challenger Milin Shah. "Our campaign theme is all about moving Parsippany forward," said Barberio. The slate will face the opposing team of mayoral candidate Paul Carifi Jr., Louis Valori and Robert J. Peluso in the June 4 Republican Party primary election. "I've been mayor for the past four years, and I believe I have been very successful as the mayor," Barberio said. "I've brought debt service down by $1.9 …

The Republican, once a Democrat, said he'll run with Councilman Vincent Ferrara on the mayor's ticket.
Former Parsippany Planning Board member Milin Shah on Friday announced his candidacy for the Township Council. He said he will run alongside Mayor James Barberio and Councilman Vincent Ferrara, who are seeking re-election. The official announcement of the ticket is expected to come Feb. 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Parsippany Hotel. Shah, 25 (he'll be 26 in a month), reflected on the time that has passed since his unsuccessful bid for council six years ago. "I’ve grown and matured quite a bit since my last campaign in 2007," he said via a statement that recounted his background as a law student at Seton Hall University, as an intellectual property specialist for a New York City firm and as a township volunteer and Parsippany Hills High …

With two official and one unofficial candidate announcements this week, Parsippany voters will have a decision to make come June.
The race for the 2013 Township Council Republican primary election is underway. On Saturday afternoon at Lake Hiawatha Park, Parsippany Area Chamber of Commerce President Robert J. Peluso and retired Parsippany Police sergeant and Board of Education member Louis Valori announced their joint campaign for the town's lawmaking body. Speaking before a group of friends and family members, Peluso said their campaign is about honoring the past while investing in the future. "My running mate and I are standing here in the coldness of winter without a podium, without giveaways and fanfare ... as two responsible community leaders... officially declaring our candidacy for council," he stated. "Responsible leaders persevere and donʼt complain, they are…

Councilmen and residents argue with mayor after Jeffrey Storms bumped to captain.
When the new Parsippany Police Capt. Jeffrey Storms finally was sworn in, the business portion of the Township Council's Tuesday night meeting began—and much of the session focused on bickering over whether the promotion was the right thing to do. The primary combatants were Mayor James Barberio and Councilman Paul Carifi Jr. The two traded verbal jabs and accused the other of putting politics above the best interests of Parsippany residents. Barberio and Police Chief Anthony DeZenzo cast doubt on the motives of those who disagreed publicly with their decision to promote Storms. The mayor commented regarding Councilman Michael dePierro's proposed amendment to limit the police to three captains. "Five years ago, we had an agreement to leave…

John Inglesino addresses questions regarding upcoming council special election to fill unexpired term seat.
Following the Parsippany Township Council's decision to temporarily fill newly appointed Freeholder John Cesaro's vacated seat with James Vigilante last Tuesday and the Wednesday announcement of Democrat Jonathan Nelson's intention to run for the seat in November, some citizens had questions regarding the regulations governing the upcoming special council election. Town Attorney John Inglesino provided answers late Friday. Because Vigilante's appointment took place before Sept. 1, the new councilman's term lasts only until Nov. 6, according to Inglesino. "While the Town Council can and did fill the vacancy temporarily by appointment, the vacancy must be filled for Councilman Cesaro’s unexpired term at the next general election," he said to…

Councilman-elect calls his victory 'bittersweet.'
To the surprise of most observers in fully packed Town Hall Council Chambers Tuesday night, what was expected by many—the election of Dr. Louis Valori to fill newly appointed Freeholder John Cesaro's vacant Township Council seat—did not materialize. Instead, the unexpired term seat went to James Vigilante, the former councilman and present U.S. Air Force Reservist and businessperson who, along with Valori and Julie Carifi, had been selected as nominees for the position Monday night by the Parsippany Republican Committee. The special council session Tuesday night took a turn even before it began. Inside and outside Town Hall, people whispered rumors that Valori, a former Board of Education member and—he thought—a retired member of the …

Michael Strumolo says Freeholder John Cesaro's vacated council seat should be filled by a woman.
The Morris County Republican Committee takes up a huge task at its upcoming Monday meeting: narrowing down who has a shot to replace Freeholder John Cesaro on the Parsippany Township Council. Among those expected to make a bid before the county committee for the seat include U.S. Air Force reservist and former Town Council member James Vigilante and Dr. Louis Valori, former Board of Education member and current vice chairperson of the Municipal Alliance Committee. Commitee member Michael Strumolo, who also sits on the Board of Education, told Patch that it's time a woman had a spot on the council. "Women are half of the population in Parsippany," Strumolo said. "We haven't had a woman on the council since Ann Grossi became a freeholder two…
