UPDATED: County OKs Schools' $130.6M Budget, But Rejects Fields Plan

The 2013-14 plan will raise the tax levy by 2.41 percent and keep a provision to reinstate five media specialists.

Editor's Note: This updated version includes comments from Board of Education President Susy Golderer. The 2013-14 budget for Parsippany schools won county approval April 4, according to a statement on the district website. The Board of Education cut the originally proposed spending plan by $1.5 million at its March 28 meeting, making the grand total for next year's budget $130,684,558. The plan does not include expenditures for athletic improvements at the high school, which led to last-minute scrambling by board members, who had to come up with a final plan to send to Interim County Executive Superintendent Rosalie S. Lamonte on the 28th. At the meeting, Parsippany Superintendent of Schools LeRoy Seitz surprised board members and …

You know 2.41 isn't the worst. However, only in New Jersey is 2 percent not 2 percent, Also Kramit that's what they were trying to do with the superintendent's salary from two years ago. They put what Dr. Seitz was suppose to be making on one line but continued to pay him from a different line. The board got caught.   more ›

BOE Fields Committee Comes Up with Plan B for Athletic Improvements

The new plan removes extras such as lights, bathrooms, bleacher upgrades and disability access.

The Parsippany Board of Education's ad hoc committee on the high school athletic fields held its first meeting Saturday, March 16, to brainstorm ideas for making improvements to facilities at the township's high schools. BOE members and community volunteers holding a variety of points of view are part of the committee, which was formed after voters rejected the school board's $7.7 million fields improvement plan during the Jan. 22 referendum. At the gathering, the members determined that short- and long-term strategies were needed to accomplish the body's stated mission to make athletic refurbishments a reality. The group came up with what's known as Phase 1, a scaled back recommendation for improvements. In answer to the resounding "no" …

Par High Stages 'Legally Blonde' This Weekend

The musical version of the Reese Witherspoon film is on the boards at PHS Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.

The can-do spirit of Elle, the main character in the film and Broadway show "Legally Blonde" seems to be contagious. The cast and crew of Parsippany High School's upcoming production of the stage musical are hard at work and filled with enthusiasm to make the show a hit, says a member of the stage crew. "The cast and crew has been working really hard for several months to put this show together," said Nicolas Limanov, who is helping the play behind the scenes. The star of the show is senior Caroline Giercyk, who portrays Elle. The PHS theater vet, just weeks away from graduation, said she's sad to be leaving, but excited for her future. Chris Reeder, who plays snooty and sexist Warner Huntington III, has many years under his belt as a …

Par High Student Defends Dignity of LGBT Teens: 'I Am Not Broken'

Teen's testimony supporting bill to ban ex-gay therapy for minors precedes Senate committee's 7-1 vote to recommend the measure.

Parsippany High School senior Jacob Rudolph took his mission to protect LGBT youth from ex-gay therapy to the state capital Monday. The 18-year-old testified before the New Jersey Senate Health Committee in support of S2278, a bill that would ban the use of controversial gay “conversion” therapy on minors.  His testimony may have had an effect: The committee voted 7-1 with two abstentions to recommend S2278. The bill now heads to the full state Senate for consideration.  Rudolph's recent Change.org petition campaign garnered more than 110,000 signatures. The petition calls on Gov. Christie to support S2278.  The teenager captured the attention of the nation when he came out as LGBT during a school assembly and earned a standing ovation …

Jacob, I think what you are doing is outstanding! I was totally unware that gay "conversion therapy" still existed and was legal. We need to become an "all inclusive society" with equal rights for everyone. I will be backing your efforts and will be headed to your website to show my support. In particular, i wanted to commend your parents - their display of 'unconditional love' for a child is …   more ›

New Football Coach Welcomed at Parsippany High

The highly praised Philip McGuane takes over the struggling Red Hawks after former coach left under a cloud.

The Parsippany-Troy Hills School District announced officially late Monday the hiring of a new head football coach for the Parsippany High School Red Hawks. Philip McGuane is to take the post for the 2013-14 season. The 30-year high school football veteran succeeds Guy Bertola, who resigned under a cloud due to what he called a "falsification" on his resume discovered after his hiring in late summer 2012. The district's statement says McGuane spent 24 years as a high school head coach and three as an  assistant coach. Middlesex County Vocational and Technical High School Principal Brian Bilal said the newcomer to the High has left "a lasting impression on the people he has worked with" in the past. "Whatever Coach McGuane wants to do he …

After Coming Out, LGBT Par-Troy Teen Takes Action

Par High student hopes a petition he is circulating will protect kids from "ex-gay" therapy.

Newly out and proud, a Parsippany LGBT teen is taking a stand to protect the dignity of all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender New Jerseyans. After coming out in front of his classmates at Parsippany High School last month, a videotaped moment that went viral on YouTube, 18-year-old Jacob Rudolph is taking action to protect others. The teenager recently launched a new petition on Change.org urging Gov. Christie to support pending legislation in Trenton that would ban the use of controversial gay “conversion” therapy on minors. This controversial practice is employed by some churches and conservative Christian groups in hopes of changing sexual orientation—despite the fact that so-called "ex-gay" therapies have been repudiated …

School Fields Need Help, Advocate Insists

Share your point of view via a Letter to the Editor.

Michael Pietrowicz of Little Vikings Football, who chaired the mayor's Fields of Dreams committee, sent an open letter addressed to school district leadership to Patch for publication. Dear Board of Education President Susy Golderer, board members and Dr. LeRoy Seitz, superintendent of schools: Thank you for conducting a special BOE meeting on Feb. 21 for the public to fully examine the current conditions at the two high schools' athletic complexes and to offer input as the board explores financing options and other potential opportunities to address the hazardous and unsafe conditions. The unacceptable and dangerous conditions have existed for many years and as time passes these issues will only further exacerbate. Over the past two years…
