Paul Carifi Jr. blasts investigation of brother, James Carifi; Barberio says candidate's bid is an 'act of revenge'; Police Chief says he's got it wrong.
Councilman Paul Carifi Jr., who is running for mayor and at least publicly so far has stayed away from the campaign controversies arising from ticketmate Dr. Louis Valori's accusations of a quid pro quo job offer against incumbent Mayor James Barberio, is speaking out. The candidate says efforts to investigate his brother, Board of Education member and retiring Parsippany Police Capt. James Carifi, are politically motivated. Barberio rejects the accusation and says Paul Carifi's criticisms are "unethical" considering his council status and may rise to the level of official misconduct. “Time and time again, Jamie Barberio resorts to unscrupulous schemes in an attempt to ascertain an easy campaign victory," Paul Carifi said in a statement …
The town filed a Superior Court motion that may force the police captain to talk—and may cost him a $368K retirement payout.
It appears there is more trouble for Parsippany Board of Education member and retiring police Capt. James Carifi. Hard on the heels of having his April 1 retirement delayed due to an in-progress Parsippany Police internal affairs probe, published reports say the township has filed a motion alleging Carifi took official and perhaps confidential documents belonging to the PPD—which, if proven, could rise to the level of theft of digital information, a second-degree offense. The June 4 primary election is 72 days away. Now that a Democratic ticket has been announced, Patch thought this a good time to take another snapshot reflecting the electorate's current mind. The most recent entrant to the race was Democrat Jonathan Nelson, now a sitting Township Council member, who is running with council candidates Robert Keller and Mihir Oza. The trio, who announced last Thursday, are running on a platform of changing the current state of Parsippany leadership and making "common-sense government common again." On Feb. 21, Mayor James Barberio launched his re-election campaign official, announcing his theme of "Moving Parsippany Forward," and his running mates, present Council Vice President Vincent Ferrara and …

Patch wants to know your thoughts on having another police captain or more officers on the streets.
The Parsippany Township Council is considering an ordinance change to limit the Parsippany Police Department to having three rather than four police captains on its employee roster. Currently, there are three police captains, but Mayor James Barberio and Police Chief Anthony DeZenzo want to promote Lt. Jeffrey Storms to captain to help oversee the Office of Emergency Management, which is now part of the PPD. Council members Michael dePierro and Paul Carifi Jr. argue that the department has too many employees in upper ranks and not enough patrolmen and detectives. Carifi says Deputy Chief Paul Philipps or Storms—as a lieutenant—can oversee OEM capably. All of these men are employed by the town's residents, so Patch wants to know: What do …

Agreed Toby, people forget that the chief was appointed by the mayor. As for "J. Cole's" comment, EVERYONE has skeletons! I guarantee there is "dirt" on every "spotless service record!"   more ›
